How to Install a Premium WordPress Theme from a ZIP File (+ Fix Common Errors)

You have downloaded a premium theme, and now you want to get it running on your site. Learning how to install a WordPress theme from a ZIP file takes only a few minutes, but a few common errors can stop you, such as “The link you followed has expired” or “The package could not be installed”. This guide shows you three ways to install a theme ZIP, and how to fix each common error.

Before You Install: Quick Checklist

  • Back up your site. A new theme changes how your whole site looks. Follow our UpdraftPlus backup guide before you switch.
  • Scan the ZIP. Only install files from trusted sources, and check them first. Our guide on how to scan WordPress plugins for malware works for themes too.
  • Find the right ZIP. Many premium downloads contain documentation, licenses and child themes. You need the installable theme ZIP, not the full package.
  • Check requirements. Compare the theme’s minimum WordPress and PHP versions with your hosting.

Method 1: Upload the ZIP from the WordPress Dashboard

This is the easiest method and works for most themes. The official WordPress documentation on themes covers the same basic flow.

  1. Log in to wp-admin and go to Appearance > Themes.
  2. Click Add New Theme at the top.
  3. Click Upload Theme.
  4. Click Choose File, select your theme ZIP, then click Install Now.
  5. When you see “Theme installed successfully”, click Activate.

Many premium themes then ask you to install required plugins, such as a page builder or the theme’s core plugin. Follow the prompts at the top of the dashboard.

Method 2: Upload via FTP or File Manager

Use this method if the dashboard upload fails because the file is too big.

  1. Unzip the theme on your computer. You should get one folder, for example betheme.
  2. Connect to your site with an FTP client, or open your host’s File Manager.
  3. Go to /wp-content/themes/.
  4. Upload the theme folder there. If you use File Manager, you can upload the ZIP and extract it in place.
  5. Go back to Appearance > Themes and activate the theme.

Method 3: Install with WP-CLI

If your host gives you SSH access, one command does the job:

wp theme install /path/to/theme.zip --activate

Common Errors and How to Fix Them

1. “The link you followed has expired”

This message usually appears when the ZIP is larger than your server’s upload limit. WordPress cannot read the request, so it shows this confusing error instead.

Fix:

  • Check your current limit under Media > Add New, where WordPress shows the “Maximum upload file size”.
  • Ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, or change them in your hosting control panel’s PHP settings.
  • Or skip the limit entirely and use Method 2 (FTP) instead.

2. “The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.”

You uploaded the wrong ZIP. This happens when you upload the full download package, which contains the theme ZIP inside it along with documentation.

Fix: Unzip the download on your computer, find the inner theme ZIP, which is usually named after the theme, and upload that file instead. A valid theme always has a style.css file in its main folder.

3. “Destination folder already exists”

A folder with the same name is already in /wp-content/themes/, often from an earlier install.

Fix: Recent WordPress versions offer a Replace current with uploaded button when this happens, which is ideal for updating. Otherwise, delete the old theme from Appearance > Themes, after switching to another theme, or remove the folder over FTP, then try again.

4. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

This is another sign of the upload limit or a security timeout. Use the same fixes as error 1.

5. Memory exhausted or white screen

Large multipurpose themes need more PHP memory. If you see “Allowed memory size exhausted”, ask your host to raise the PHP memory limit. The official WordPress common errors guide explains this and other errors in detail.

6. Theme installed but looks broken

Most premium themes need their required plugins and a demo import to look like the preview. Install the bundled plugins, then use the theme’s demo importer. Clear your cache afterwards.

Should You Use a Child Theme?

If you plan to edit theme files or add custom code, yes. Many premium themes include a ready-made child theme in the download package. Install the parent theme first, then install and activate the child theme. Your custom changes stay safe when the parent theme updates.

Popular Themes to Try

Looking for a powerful multipurpose theme? Two of the most popular options are Betheme, with its huge pre-built website library, and The7, which works with Elementor, WPBakery and the Block Editor. Not sure which to choose? Read our Betheme vs The7 comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a theme ZIP on WordPress.com?

Only on plans that allow custom themes. Self-hosted WordPress.org sites can always upload themes.

Do I need to unzip the theme before uploading in the dashboard?

No. The dashboard uploader needs the ZIP file. Only unzip it when you use FTP.

Final Thoughts

Now you know how to install a WordPress theme from a ZIP file using the dashboard, FTP or WP-CLI, and how to fix the most common errors. Remember the basics: back up first, upload the correct inner ZIP, and check your upload limits. With that, any premium theme should install in minutes.
