The next major version of WordPress is on its way. WordPress 7.2 is scheduled for release on December 8, 2026, and it brings a brand-new default theme called Ipsum. In this preview we cover the WordPress 7.2 features planned so far, the full release schedule and how to prepare your site. Because 7.2 is still in development, plans can change before launch, and we will update this post when the final version ships.

Meet Ipsum, the New Default Theme

The biggest visible change in WordPress 7.2 is its new default theme. As announced on the Make WordPress Core blog, Ipsum is planned to be bundled with 7.2. It also breaks a long tradition: it is not named after a year like Twenty Twenty-Five. Going forward, default themes will have their own names and change “when the design calls for it, not when the calendar does.”

What we know about Ipsum so far:

  • A minimal blog theme. It is built around the blogging experience, as a “blank canvas” to make your own.
  • Named after lorem ipsum, the placeholder text that fills a page until real content arrives.
  • A block theme. The goal is to ship with as little CSS as possible, with styles set in theme.json and editable through Global Styles.
  • Style variations that “re-ink” the whole page, images included.
  • Accessibility: the team says every style combination passes WCAG AA.
  • Quiet design details, such as dotted underlines and a small set of typesets, with headers, heroes and sidebars available when you need them.

Ipsum is already open for testing in its GitHub repository, so feedback can still shape it before release.

Planned WordPress 7.2 Features

The official Roadmap to 7.2 lists the main areas the team is working on. Remember, roadmap items are goals, not guarantees.

Collaboration: Notes get better

Notes, the in-editor commenting feature, is planned to support suggestions and emoji reactions, making team reviews more interactive.

Security: sudo mode, Secrets API and Application Passwords

  • “Sudo mode” would require you to re-authenticate before sensitive actions.
  • A Secrets API would give plugins a first-class, safer way to store credentials.
  • Application Passwords hardening is also planned.

These changes matter even more now that sites connect to AI tools. If you use the WordPress MCP Adapter, Application Passwords are how your AI client signs in.

Design and styling

  • Styling form elements in Global Styles.
  • Expanded responsive styling and custom state support.
  • Individual blocks that properly reflect global settings.

New blocks

The roadmap includes a new Description List block and the long-awaited Table of Contents block.

Everyday improvements

  • Fixes for common writing annoyances.
  • Clearer error messages with a copy button.
  • Refinements to the media inserter and modal.
  • New SVG icons for the admin bar and menu, replacing Dashicons, for more reliable rendering and better support for assistive technology.
  • An extensible Site Editor, so plugin authors can register their own screens and settings.

How to Prepare Your Site for WordPress 7.2

  1. Stay on the latest 7.1 release. Security releases come first. Read our post on the WordPress 7.1.3 update to learn what was fixed and how to update safely.
  2. Set up reliable backups. Major updates can conflict with themes or plugins. UpdraftPlus Premium can take a backup automatically before every update.
  3. Test on staging. Developers and agencies can try the beta and release candidates on a staging site, never on a live site.
  4. Check your theme and plugins. Watch changelogs for “tested with WordPress 7.2” notes, especially for page builders and multipurpose themes.
  5. Wait a few days on critical sites. For busy stores, it can be wise to wait for the first minor release or for your key plugins to confirm support.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is WordPress 7.2 coming out?

The official schedule lists December 8, 2026.

Will Ipsum replace my current theme?

No. Updating WordPress never switches your active theme. Ipsum will simply be installed and available to activate.

Is the Table of Contents block confirmed?

It is on the official 7.2 roadmap, but features can still move to a later release if they are not ready.

Final Thoughts

WordPress 7.2 looks like a solid release focused on security, styling and collaboration, topped off with the fresh Ipsum default theme. Keep your site on the latest 7.1 version, set up automatic backups, and test 7.2 on staging when the release candidates arrive. We will update this guide with the final WordPress 7.2 features after the December 8 launch.
